On Reality
W, X, Y, Z: I read all your replies. I've been ranting about Democratic mistakes because, I dunno, conceivably Democrats could change, and just possibly, that might help somehow. But finally I realize, that's not reality.
Reality is, we are now in a disaster far worse than I ever expected, as late as the beginning of this year. I just keep not believing that enough of the American people want an authoritarian society, that we are getting it. But it's true, they do want it. It's really true.
It doesn't always take a majority. 20K Bolsheviks took over in 1917. Hitler began as farce, did not have a majority in 1932 (by 1938, he did). Most often, a majority or large minority is what puts a dictator in: Augustus, Mao, Putin, Huey Long, plenty more. They get in because that's what "the people" want.
In the US now it is a large minority, and though I long resisted reality, today I see it is enough. It doesn't much matter why they want what they want: they just want it. And we're getting it.
I fear it's already too late to stop it. I don't see any way in reality that Democrats can ever regain real power. Even if they did, there would be nothing they could do to stop what is happening from happening again, soon and worse.
Reality is, humans as all life, are evolved for this. To form tribes based on nearness, and fight others. Cultural evolution made ideas act as proxies for genes, and now the Web has made ideology the main measure of nearness. The evolutionary imperative is not just to reproduce and cooperate, but to compete, exclude and kill.
Evolution can select any trait out as well as in. Intelligence is merely an accident of evolution, by pure trial and error. Intelligence looked spectacularly successful for a few million years, but rocks are full of fossils of successes that evolution eliminated eons ago.
Yes, it can happen here. It is.
